Pallekele: Pakistani team easily defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the opening one-day International of the five match series played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, Sri Lanka, thus leading the series by 1-0.
Pakistani batsmen played with patience through-out the innings avoiding any mishap, thus chasing a low target of 136 runs in the 35th over of the match for the loss of four wickets. Hafeez who scored 37 runs remained the leading run-scorer accompanied by Misbah 30 and Akmal 36.
The Sri Lankan bowlers failed to restrict Pakistan while chasing a low target and only took four wickets in the innings. Malinga, Kulasekera and Herath were the three Lankan bowlers who shared one wicket each while one batsman was run out.
Earlier Pakistani bowlers bowled exceptionally well to restrict Lankan’s at 135 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 42 overs. The match was halted several times due to the rainfall. Thirimanne, who scored 42 runs, was the only batsman from Sri Lanka to resist against Pakistani bowlers while the other batsmen failed to cross 20’s.
Umar Gul and Mohammad Sami were the most successful bowlers for Pakistan followed by Mohammad Hafeez who took two wickets.
Umar Gul is the Man of the Match: First of all I would like to thank the almighty. I am happy with my performance today. This is a lucky ground for me as I took 5 wickets in the World Cup also. Our fielding was bad today and we would like to improve on that.
