PM Contempt Case: Aitzaz questions bench’s eligibility

ISLAMABAD: During the hearing of Prime Minister Gilani’s contempt case, Aitzaz Ahsan again questioned the eligibility of the Supreme Court bench hearing the case.Aitzaz hassan

The seven-member larger bench including Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Asif Khosa, Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani, Justice Ajaz Afzal Khan, Justice Ajaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmad and Justice Athar Syed was hearing the case.

The Prime Minister’s counsel, Ahsan argued that that the same judges who initiated the case against the PM and were now hearing it, adding that under Article 10A of the constitution the sitting bench was not eligible to hear the case.

Justice Ajaz Afzal assured Ahsan the judgment in the case would be fair. Ahsan said that national dignity needs to be considered when it comes to the President.

The court directed Ahsan to complete his arguments by next Wednesday as the Attorney General’s arguments would be heard the following day (Thursday).

The case was adjoined till Friday (April 12, 2012).
