LAHORE: Federal government has decided to launch “Prime Minister Laptops National Scheme” (PML-N Scheme) for free-of-cost distribution of 100,000 laptops among the deserving students of federal educational institutions.
The distribution criteria for these laptops will be systemised by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. According to a handout issued here on Thursday, this was disclosed by the Director General (IT) Higher Education Commission Anwar Majeed while giving a briefing to Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan in a high-level meeting here Thursday.
Rana Mashhood said that Punjab government will surely achieve the millennium development goals of United Nations more efficiently as compared to other provinces of Pakistan.
The educationists from Punjab will play an exemplary role to accomplish this gigantic task, he added. He revealed that 74 percent kids between the age of 5 and 9 years are studying in primary schools of the province according to a survey conducted by PSLM Data of the Federal Bureau of Statistics in 2011.
The minister expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that the dropout rate is as high as 38 percent just after one year of their first enrolment in Montessori level. Ten million kids are studying in the public sector schools in Punjab out of which six million kids are in the 6th grade.
The Punjab government is planning to establish smart schools under pilot project in various districts besides Danish schools where the students of 6th grade will be given computerised tablets loaded with the curricular material. These tablets will be given link with the digital library of the federal government to enable the students to benefit from the reference material also.
He informed the meeting that Chief Minister has decided to impose enrolment emergency from August 14 to August 16 this year during which the parents will be sensitised to send their kids to schools.
This task will be accomplished by door-to-door campaign through 30,000 teachers preferably in 40 tehsils in the first phase.
These districts include Lahore, Faisalabad, Kasur, Bhakkar, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan. The enrollment emergency campaign will start from Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore on August 14, the day of Independence of Pakistan.
Chief Minister will inaugurate campaign in the presence of thousands of students, the minister added.
