Lyari operation continues as police fail to advance into deep lanes

Karachi: A policeman was killed and more than 15 people injured as gun battle and grenade attacks continued in the narrow lanes of Lyari neighbourhood for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday.Lyari Opration

Mobile phone services were shut in the area to cut communication between the armed groups confronting the law enforcers. Water and electricity supply also remained suspended.

Around 100,000 people have been suffering due to heavy exchange of fire over the last four days and run short of basic necessities like, food,water, milk etc.

The government is considering Rangers deploying in the area as police seem to be failed in advancing in the narrow streets of the oldest neighbourhood of the metropolis.

Police said that a constable Muhammad Tufail was killed in overnight battle while nine people wounded in Lee Market area in a grenade attack Tuesday morning.

Several people have been killed in different parts of the conflict zone which turned to be battle field after “gangsters” gunned down a local leader of Pakistan People’s Party Malik Muhammad Khan last week.

People were seen leaving their houses as law enforcers continued efforts to overcome gangsters holed up in the area.

Media reports said that the criminals fired rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and used other sophisticated weapons against the law enforcers led by CID SP Chaudhry Aslam.

On Tuesday, several offices of the PPP were set on fire as party workers left the locality to save their lives. The media reports said despite the lapse of four days, police could not make their way in the area and had spent all the resources at infamous Cheel Chowk.
