“I married Shaniera in Lahore last week in a simple ceremony and this is the start of a new life for me, my wife and for my kids,” Wasim told AFP.

The 47-year-old’s first wife Huma died in 2009 after multiple organ failure.

Wasim proposed to 30-year-old Thompson, a former public relations consultant, on bended knee last month.

Thompson came to Karachi earlier this month before going to Lahore to see Wasim’s ailing father, where the marriage was solemnised.

Wasim said Thompson had converted to Islam and is learning Urdu.

“She has embraced Islam and is learning our language. She has been close to my sons and they form a very good bond,” said Wasim of his two sons from his first marriage.

Wasim played 104 Tests and 356 one-day internationals for Pakistan in a career lasting from 1984 to 2003.

He was regarded as one of the best left-arm fast bowlers to have played the game and remains a major celebrity in Pakistan.

Wasim was player of the tournament in the country’s only triumph in the World Cup, in Australia in 1992. He captained Pakistan to a runners-up finish in the 1999 World Cup in England.

Pakistani cricket Wasim Akram to marry Melbourne woman

wasim akramPAKISTAN cricket great Wasim Akram is engaged to marry Melbourne woman Shaniera Thompson.

The famed left-arm bowler, 47, proposed on bended knee in their lounge room to Ms Thompson, 30.

“It was the romantic moment of my life because it was so genuine,” she said.

A former public relations consultant from Brighton, Ms Thompson has converted to Islam, and will call Pakistan home. She said Akram was nervous about proposing in the traditional way.

“He was really sweet about it.

He asked me what my dream proposal would be and I said I’m not the type of woman that likes a big scene. I would want it to be at home or somewhere private.

“Then I came into the lounge room and he was on his knee and asked me if I’d marry him.”

But the joyful mood was soon broken by a worried look on Thompson’s face.

She told Akram: “If we are doing this the traditional way, then you have to ask my father.”

He called Ms Thompson’s father, who gave his blessing.

The pair met in Melbourne in 2011 and Akram said he was happy he had found love.

“I never thought I would get married again, but I am lucky and very happy to find love again,” he said.

“It just goes to show that life can give you a second chance.”

Akram’s first wife, Huma, died in 2009. They had two boys, now aged 15 and 12.

Wasim says Pakistani batsmen afraid of playing shots

Karachi: Criticizing Pakistan’s 4-wicket defeat to Australia in first One Day International (ODI) at Sharjah, former captain and left arm pacer Wasim Akram has said that Pakistani batsmen are afraid of playing shots during power play.Wasim Akram

Akram while talking to private Pakistani television Geo News on Wednesday said that the batsmen should play attacking cricket during first 10 overs of the inning.

He said that sending Kamran Akmal in lower order was a wrong decision, adding that “Kamran is more dangerous when he play as opener…I think he should be sent as opener.”

“I have played for 12-14 years at the same Sharjah wicket…I think Pakistan should have to play with three pacers,” the southpaw said.

The great cricketer who played for over 18 years for his country said that he had never seen such weak Australian middle order. “Despite that our bowlers failed to restrict the Australian batsmen,” he added.

He recalled Imran Khan’s, the former captain and great cricket of Pakistan, word “Tucha” saying I always go with three specialist fast bowlers and proper batsmen on such wicket despite choosing “Tuchas” in team.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently picked out different captains for the three different formats by making Misbah-ul-Haq skipper for ODI and Test while Hafeez for T20, the former cricketer said that it would be too early to comment on Misbah’s captaincy. “We should show confidence over him…he is performing well for past two year,” he added.
